For those of you that have a Jeep Liberty, the time will come when you need to replace the radiator as with all vehicles on the road today. Most radiators have plastic tanks on them, which makes repairing them very difficult. It is sometimes better to just replace the entire radiator then try to fix it.

Watch the video below to get the basics on this procedure.

I know there is a lot I left out but I will be updating it soon so stay tuned and remember that all radiators are not the same so get an OEM for the best fit and performance.

How do you remove the fan shroud? It looks like the fan on the motor is in the way. Does it have to be removed? I have remove the front support that is attached to the hood latch and the top two mount bolts for the shroud, now what?

Thank you for your help. I am replacing the compressor clutch and was trying to figure out if I could get the radiator out without taking out the condenser (don’t want to discharge the coolant if I don’t have to). Your video showed I can. Just have to figure out this fan shroud without taking things off that I don’t need to.

Thanks again,
Keith

Hi Keith, The fan and fan shroud assembly come out together and after removing the bolts and electrical connector, it should come straight out. I am going to assume at this point that it is an electric fan. The a radiator will come out with out removing the condenser but it is a little tricky. I hope this helps. Jeff

Jeff, I’m doing some work on my wife’s ’03 KJ and came across your site. Awesome! That video is of immense help. I have to replace the high pressure power steering line. After getting the part and doing some homework, it looks light I might have to at the very least loose and reposition the radiator to get at the PS pump. It looked like you had plenty of room to get to the pump. Is this because you removed the fan? Can the fan be removed without removing the radiator? Do you have any suggestions?

Thanks!
Brett

Hi Brett, thanks for the comment. We really like to hear it when we are putting videos up on the site. To answer your question, yes you can remove the fan/shroud without removing the radiator but it can be a little tricky. If you have problems with it let me know and I can walk you through it. Jeff

Jeff,

Thank you for the response. As it turns out, I have the model with the mechanical fan (heavy duty tow/cooling package). I’ll have to remove the nut from the clutch at the water pump/pulley. Looks straight forward, but who knows. I have seen some diagrems and know it will take some force to loosen this nut. Any suggestions on imobilizing the serpentine belt to acompish this? thanks again!

Brett

Hi Brett, for that fan clutch they make fan clutch wrenches to hold the assembly from turning so you can remove the nut. You can find them at just about any parts house but if not then try http://www.thetoolwarehouse.net/ or http://www.ntxtools.com/ . They both are good places to find all the tools you need at great prices. I hope this helps . Jeff

Hi Jeff – Very informative video, esp about the door regulators. Never knew that!

Question – my condenser has a leak (just blows warm air now) and I’d like to replace it myself. Do I need to remove the radiator to get to it? ’02 Jeep Libby. We will get the shop to replace the freon.

8

Hi TrinHi, unfortunately yes you will need to remove the radiator first. As far as the new condenser I would use an OEM from the dealership on that one or you may have problems down the road with an after market. ( Don’t forget the oil ). Hope this helps. Jeff

9

Thanks Jeff. This might be a bigger job than I want to tackle :-) .
Do I need to replace the o-rings as well?

10

Hi Trin, Yes I would any tome you breach a system. Its good insurance against leaks. Also when adding oil ( double end cap PAG ) put it in the inlet tube of the condenser. Jeff

Thanks Jeff! Much appreciated!

Jeff, I have a couple issues that maybe interrelated hopefully you can help tell me if they are. I have a Jeep Liberty 03 Renegade. I have an issue where I am losing antifreeze from my system, I have found a small leak i my radiator so I know I will have to replace it by the way mine is a belt drive fan, the other problem is the jeep over heats but it only seems to do it when the ac is running and we are doing alot of stop and go. So could the 2 issues be related or 2 separate issue. Just for a little background the water is 6 months old 2nd in 2 yrs and I just replaced the the thermostat. Any help would be great!
Thanks
Mike

Hi Mike, yes the two could be connected. If the cooling system is not working properly due to low coolant and low pressure then as soon as you put a load on the engine ( i.e. the A/C system ) then your cooling system will not be able to effectively work properly. Also compounded by the additional BTUs of heat that are being released from the condense will also cause an overheating issue with a ineffective cooling system. Jeff

I have an 02 liberty that has been overheating -heating gauge goes sometimes to three quarters of the way once it gets up to operating temperature New thermostat and new antifreeze changed out
I also was told to see if I could compress the top hose coming out of the radiator once it was idling warm and I could completely compress it.
I have lost fluid periodically. Is it the water pump and or something else?

Jeff,
Thanks for the video. The plastic tanks on my wife’s jeep are leaking and I’m going to have to pull it. Just a tip on the window regulators, there is a place (www.steigerperformance.com) that makes a replacement part of metal for the window regulators that lasts. I have had to do the replacement on both of the rear windows.

Hi Jeff, I have a radiator leak. I just bought some “BAR’S LEAK” liquid aluminum radiator stop leak solution, and it say’s, TIP: “if direct access to radiator is not available, install in overflow tank”. Now the fluid tank is up in the left hand corner of the engin compartment. and I can’t seem to find an overflow tank anywhere in the manual or anywhere around the the radiator. Is there anything that you can help me with on this?

Thanks, Nate B.

I have just removed the fan shroud on my Jeep liberty, and found that there wasn’t enough clearance to the mechanical fan to clear it, so I loosened the radiator mount bolts on the upper part of the radiator (acessable through the grille) to pull it forward and allow clearance.

My issue is I don’t want to buy a $50 tool to remove the mechanical fan one time… Any ideas?

Hi Doug, depending on your parts house ( i.e Autozone , O’Rileys , Pep Boys ) They may have tool rentals available. Jeff
